5 Spring 2018 The Community Banker and we never got to see his winning run! What an injustice – maybe Canadian t.v. should be regulated as heavily as our banks. I have spent the last month recovering and healing. This has given me time to focus more on banking-related issues. One of the things that caught my interest recently was a press release from the American Bankers Association (ABA). In that release, the ABA crowed that it hired a longtime JP Morgan lobbyist as its Chief Policy Officer, including over legislative affairs. After seeing this announcement, I was reminded why I align myself with the MIB and the ICBA. Our association(s) truly have one mission – community banks and banking. With the hiring of a lobbyist from one of the too-big-too fail institutions, the ABA showed its true colors – which does not involve being an advocate for the small guys like us. I am glad to be part of an association, MIB, which dedicates 100 percent of its efforts to promoting the unique interests of community banks. And, MIB’s partnership with ICBA ensures that theWall Street guys are not the only ones who have a seat at the table as is evidenced by the fact that, together, we were able to push a meaningful community banking relief bill (S.2155) through the U.S. Senate in March. To this end of working for Montana’s community banks, I will be traveling toWashington D.C. in early April to attend ICBA’s Capital Summit. Joining with hundreds of other bankers from across the country, I will be making my voice and your voice heard through MIB’s advocacy efforts, and by talking directly with Montana’s congressional delegation about the many benefits community bankers provide to our local communities and to our national economic health. Finally, as you will see within the pages of this edition of the magazine, MIB is gearing up for our 51st annual state convention. I encourage you to register for the event today, and hope to see you in Missoula in July for Montana’s banking event of the year.
