2015 Speakers and Workshop Presenters Patrick Barkey, Director, Bureau of Business & Economic Research, University of Montana Patrick Barkey became director of the BBER in July 2008, after serving as director of health care research since April 2007. He has been involved with economic forecasting and health care policy research for twen- ty- four years, both in the private and public sector. He served previously as Director of the Bureau of Busi- ness Research at Ball State University in Indiana for fourteen years, overseeing and participating in a wide variety of projects in labor market research, and state and regional economic policy issues. He attended the University of Michigan, receiving a B.A. (’79) and Ph.D. (’86) in economics. Jack Hartings, Chairman, Independent Community Bankers of America Jack Hartings is Chairman of ICBA and the Federal Delegate Board. Previously, he served as an ICBA state direc- tor, chairman of ICBA’s Policy Development Committee and member of its Government Relations, Regulatory Review and Strategic Planning committees. Hartings recently served as a member of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Community Bank Advisory Council. He was a member of the Federal Reserve’s Small Bank Advisory Board, a board member of the Ohio Banking Commission, and an executive director, chairman and board member of the Community Bankers Association of Ohio. He is an AIB instructor for the Principles of Banking at Wright State University. He lives in Coldwater, Ohio, with his wife, JoAnn. Melanie Hall, Commissioner, Montana Division of Banking & Financial Institutions Melanie Hall provides the overall leadership to the Banking Division, which is responsible for the supervision of 54 state - chartered banks and 9 state - chartered credit unions with over 20 billion in total assets. In addition, her division licenses and examines over 1,000 non - bank financial entities including mortgage lenders and mortgage brokers, consumer loan companies, sales finance companies, title lenders, deferred deposit lenders and escrow businesses. Commissioner Hall obtained her B.A. in Economics from Eckerd College in St. Peters- burg, Florida, and her juris doctor from Tulane Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana. She has been an attorney in private practice dealing with civil litigation in a wide variety of areas including maritime law, environmental regulation, commercial transactions and class action litigation. Thomas J. Parliment, Ph.D. Chairman & CEO of Parliment Consulting Services, Inc. Dr. Tom Parliment is an economist and has served as commercial banker, investment banker, consultant and educator to the financial services industry over the past four decades. His experience as Chairman of Audit, Asset/Liability Management, and Loan Committees makes him familiar with the responsibilities and challenges that directors face today. Dr. Parliment is serving as Interim President of a $300 million bank and is a Director of Farin & Associates, Inc., Fitchburg, WI, which is a financial services consulting firm that provides asset/ liability management solutions, retail product pricing solutions and Web products and services. Dr. Parliment has served on the faculty of various graduate banking schools. He Formerly a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Parliment earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the State University of New York. Jim Nowak, Vice President - Risk Management, United Bankers’ Bank Jim holds a B.S. degree in Finance from St. Cloud State University in MN. Prior to joining United Bankers’ Bank (UBB) in early 2002, Jim gained eight years of experience in the fields of Asset Liability Management and eco- nomic forecasting. During his banking career, he has worked for financial institutions as large as $5 billion in assets. Jim developed and manages ALMEdge ® , UBB’s asset/ liability modeling product. Jim hosts an annual users group conference which regularly draws over 200 community banker’s from around the upper U.S. Jim is a former member of the faculty at the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, Madi- son. He is also a guest commentator on Fox9 news and WCCO radio on matters of finance and economics. Chris Thomas, Vice President & Eric Jensen, Business Development Officer, Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle Chris Thomas has focused his 18 - year finance career on helping community lenders increase their success. His in - depth understanding of community lending operations and priorities is the result of his experience managing and growing correspondent banking pro- grams for institutions including SunTrust Bank and Columbia Bank. Eric Jensen’s in - depth knowledge of the financial services industry is the result of more than 30 years of banking experience. He has worked in a variety of roles for a number of commercial banks in- cluding Home Street Bank, NorthStar Bank, Pacific Northwest Bank, and U.S. Bank. Angela Murdo, Manager, CPA, CFE, & Mike Tobiason, Shareholder, CPA, CVA, Anderson ZurMuehlen & Co. Angela (Angie) Murdo works in the firm’s attest department and specializes in audit and consulting work for financial institutions, in- cluding compliance exams and consulting. She has received specific training in bank compliance, including participation in Fede ral compliance schools. Mike serves as the Missoula Office Vice President and director of Advisory and Risk Management Services. Mike’s practice consists principally of valuing closely held businesses including financial institutions.
